This is a close to home issue which I really have a hard time thinking anyone would be able to disagree with. If you do, well I really think you have some serious issues.
Has anyone looked at the lovely state of the Milwaukee River lately?? Particularly the part around Veterans Memorial Park. It's in a horrid state of polluted mess. Eutrophication is destroying the wildlife and aesthetic value of the river in every regard. It's rather disconcerting. I propose several things. The first of which should be better pollution barriers for the construction going on downtown. Especially the new ski and cyclery going in right next to the river. There should be run off barriers between that construction zone and the river. Then the new condimium complex directly touching the river is not doing a very good job at stopping the run off of the sediments into the river. This needs to be stopped with barriers and some sort of grass barrier in between the river and the construction. Another huge thing for the river is the damn located directly south of the highway 60 Bridge. That damn slows down river movement to the bare minimum speed and this is terrible because it reduces the amount of oxygen in the river. Oxygen allows the fish and plants to stay alive which keep the river clean. Run off from farmers fields to the north and rain water also cause serious problems. The water that runs into our storm sewers goes directly into the river and is not cleaned at the waste water treatment plant, this is not helping our badly disease infested river. The E. Coli count in that river is dangerously high. And thats just an indicator for other bacteria and diseases which live in the river. I don't understand it all, why can't the city impose stricter regulations on construction along with eliminating the factors which are causing the pollution to occur. It would not cost the city an arm and a leg to do. Removing the damn may cost $3 million but if the river looks better along the main drag as a result, the increased revenue along the riverfront may prove to counter that cost. Plus, the city would have to pay no money to make the construction companies comply with the laws and regulations set in place by the state and EPA. They wouldn't even have to hire people to go and investigate the construction sites because anyone driving down the road could see that the construction sites are not following the rules/law and phone it in and have the city deal with it that way. It's really rather a cost effective idea. Plus it would be good on the eyes. :)

cool, an environmental post. yea, it's a shame that we can do such simple things everyday to help the environment but no one does these things. I think everyone is educated on these little things. i mean we learn them in elementry school! It's too bad that the city can't show an example. They want our roads and buildings to be beautiful and historical, why not preserve the river and other wildlife?
I agree completely with this post. This post really needs to be sent to the village, or atleast a letter expressing your feelings. There does need to be a lot more done to help this river. Although removing the damn would help with the situation, I believe more can be done before that, and that would be a last ditch effort to perserve things. I think homes around the river should be limited to as how much fertilizer can be used on their yards- if any at all. Somethiing does need to be done soon to save the river.
talking about the lack of care most people have for the environment makes me wanna scream. While I'm down in the keys I see so much trash...you want to save a river, I would like to save our ocean which is quickly becoming a new dumping ground.
Here is a fact: A ship can dump ANYTHING 20 miles from shore. ANYTHING refers to everything from plastic bags to human waste to large chunks of metal...pretty much anything they wanna throw off the side.
I am all for saving the river. you should write up a plan and send it around like a petition to get signatures and then give it to village council.
Jeffrey, I completely agree. The state of that river is disgusting, and you wonder sometimes how people don't care. I work at the pool and when people come in to look at the new climbing wall, everything has to be just perfect. But look at our environment!!! I mean, some things are more important to take care of. I guess we care more cuz we run over it everyday, and it's just sickening. What is that going to do for our kids and grandkids? Think government people, this is important and time is of the essence.
I whole heartedly agree with what u and everyone else who left comments r saying! Its so disgusting in more ways then one seeing that when u go over the bridge. You would hope that people would care more about our enviornment than the new buildings and roads... but it seems that that is not the case. So i think u SHOULD send a letter to the village expressing your consern and possible solutions. And get people to sign it. I will totally be the first to sign!
Petition!
Not gonna lie, I'm not too concerned about it.
thats fine. Not like we are going to hunt you down or anything if you don't care.
yeah umm seirously...who cares?...do you have some idea of going swimming in the rive or sumthing?
